A Third of Small Dogs were
Nuisance Barkers
A recent survey has suggested that a third of small dogs in the UK have been nuisance barkers at some point in their lives. The survey was carried out by the website Dog Friendly Britain in which 640 UK dog owners were canvassed on their views on nuisance barking.
The survey discovered that a third of small dog owners had been concerned about nuisance barking compared to a fifth of larger dog owners. However, one in eight dog owners did not consider their dog's barking a problem.
Firmness and love were considered the best ways to treat way nuisance barking - a view shared by owners of barkers and non-barkers alike. A third of dog owners advocated the use of deterrents such as spray collars, rattles and bottle sprays. More severe measures such as electric shock collars had only been used by 1.5% of dog owners - while an overwhelming 72% of owners wanted to see such deterrents banned in the UK. 20% of owners thought it was down to individual choice and 8% found them acceptable.
