Christmas 2007 sees more pets dumped than ever
"A dog is for life, not just for Christmas." Well, the famous TV ad seems to have run its course because initial reports suggest that a record number of dogs were dumped over Christmas and New Year as animal shelters struggled to cope. Some reports suggest that shelters were taking as manay as 120 dogs per week.
Amanda Robinson of the UK's largest dog welfare charity, Dogs Trust said that they were inundated with more than 600 unwanted dogs in December. While, Jennifer Martinez of Grinshill Animal Rescue Centre, Shrewsbury, called for tighter rules for buying a dog.
The reason behind so many unwanted pets is unclear. However, the cost of veterinary care and rising vets' fees may have something to do with it. Make sure you are never vulnerable to vets' fees for accidents or illness to your pet by taking out pet insurance. Pet insurance protects owner and pet alike at a cost that is so cheap that it's almost a crime not to have. Click here to get a quote for pet insurance now.
